Minneapolis-based Carlson and Brussels-based Rezidor Hotel Group announced that after 17 years working together, they have established The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group. The new entity represents 1,319 hotels, 209,000 guestrooms, 80,000 employees in 80 countries with US$7 billion systemwide sales.
While the comopanies have not actually merged, the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group will pursue the global alignment and management of its brands, the development of its revenue generation engines, global purchasing opportunities, and people development, on a global basis.
Commercial activities will be conducted under the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group name.

The travel and tourism industry could do more for responsible and sustainable tourism, reveals a survey that took place at World Travel Market 2011.
As the travel and tourism industry continues to grow, there is an increased emphasis on responsible travel. During WTM 2011 Technology and Online Travel exhibitor SustainIt, the leading software and data consultancy that specializes in sustainability performance, surveyed more than 200 WTM participants. This was to understand the industry’s experiences of sustainability and responsible tourism and work out whether the industry really is engaging in the principles of sustainability.
More than seven out of ten industry professionals, including hoteliers, airlines, resorts, and tourist attractions, believe the travel and tourism industry could do more to reduce poverty and support sustainable local economic development in destination communities. Only 18 percent of companies questioned have sustainable supply chains and procurement policies in place.

A total of 27 people were killed in less than a day in Acapulco, including 14 men who were decapitated, as Mexico's drug violence spills into this tourist paradise.
Acapulco has seen fierce turf wars between drug gangs, and the bloodshed is scaring some vacationers away even though little of the violence happens in tourist areas.
The Associated Press reports that decapitation slayings and most of the other killings that occurred in a stretch of just a few hours from Friday night into Saturday also occurred in non-tourism areas. But two police officers were shot to death on a major bayside avenue in front of visitors and locals.
The 14 headless bodies, and a 15th intact corpse, were found by police on a street outside a shopping center accompanied by written warnings from a drug cartel, authorities said.
