The prospect of restaurants  being obliged to display calories on menus has been criticised by the Restaurants Association of Ireland and a leading chef.

Oliver Dunne and the Restaurants Association of Ireland were reacting to a suggestion by the Minister for Health that all types of restaurants should be included in the Government’s anti-obesity measure.

Dr James Reilly opened a consultation process about displaying calorie information on menus last Thursday in an effort to tackle Ireland’s growing obesity problem.

The Minister said he wanted “all restaurants” to be included and that action after consultation would be “up to and including legislation” if the industry did not comply. Asked if all types of outlets, from high end to fast food, would be included, he replied “absolutely”.

Douglas Jordan, registrar at Failte Ireland, is to leave the comoany under the Government's early retirement scheme. He has been responsible for the registration and grading of hotels and othert tourism enterprises and developed and implemented the current Grading Scheme.

Dougles is currently International Councillor for Skal International in which capacity he represents Ireland on the International Council. He is also a former president of Skal International Dublin and the Irish Hospitality Institute and is currently Chairman of the IHI College of Fellows.

Tourism operators from around the island of Ireland travelled to London recently, to join Tourism Ireland for ‘Excursions’, an annual group travel show which attracts over 1,000 influential coach and group tour operators from around Great Britain.

The one-day show provided an ideal opportunity for the participating Irish tourism companies to network and do business face-to-face with decision-makers in the important coach and group travel sector. Visitors to the show included coach tour operators, teachers, as well as group travel organisers representing all types of clubs and associations around GB, who are responsible for putting in place the arrangements for holidays and excursions for groups. The objective was to encourage them to introduce the island of Ireland into their programmes or brochures for 2012, or to extend the programmes in which Ireland already features.
