Roly's Bistro Ballsbridge has been ordered to pay €500 to Jey Lo, a native of Hong Kong, because it initially failed to grant him an interview. The Equality Tribunal found that the resturant had given no sastisfactory explanation as to why the complainant was not offered an interview when he rang up to apply for a job. He had said that his Irish wife was offered an interview when she rang. The Equality Officer accepted however that the restaurant did not have a practice of excluding non-native English speakers or non-Irish people from employment and that it had subsequently offered to interview the complainant.

'It is important that employers take care to ensure a transparent and consistent practice at all stages of the application process', she said. She added that it would have been prudent for the complainant to have availed of an interview when it was offered at a  later stage.
